Wiring Configurations for the Telos Desktop Director™
31 October, 2000
The Telos Desktop Directors are used with the Telos TWOx12 and System 2101. The following bulletin documents connections to the Telos TWOx12 or 2101 Studio Interface. At the end of this bulletin are several notes that apply only to the 2101 studio interface.
Wiring Configurations for the Desktop Director™
Each Desktop Director™ is supplied with a 25-foot cable which is used to make this connection. You can make your own cables as long as they follow the wiring shown in the user’s manual. Category 3 type (Cat 3) or higher cable must be used; we suggest Category 5 type (Cat 5) wire. The usual configuration of two Desktop Directors involves merely plugging in this supplied cable to the Director and TWOx12 or 2101 Studio Interface as illustrated below:
The usual Desktop Director™ configuration is simple and straightforward.
If the Desktop Director™ must be located more than 250 feet (76 Meters) from the TWOx12 you will need to use a local power supply (Desktop Director Expander Kit part # 0212-1400) to supply power to it. In that case, your configuration will look like the following:
In the extended configuration the Desktop Director™ must be within 2300 feet (700 meters) of the TWOx12. The power supply must be 250 feet (76 Meters) or less from the Desktop Director.
Multiple Desktop Directors on a single port
This connection option is similar to the preceding, and allows two Desktop Directors to be connected to a single Desktop Director™ port of the TWOx12 (allowing for 4 Desktop Directors total). To do so you will need to use a external power supply and modular splitter (Desktop Director™ Power Supply Kit part # 0212-1400) to connect it.
There are two reasons you might wish to do this. If you need to connect more than two Desktop Directors you would have to use this method. Or, you might choose this method to save on cable runs back to a TWOx12 located some distance away. See diagram below:
In the Multiple configuration one Desktop Director™ must be reconfigured to have its termination resistors removed (see below). This unterminated Desktop Director™ must be within 33 feet (10 meters) of the power supply
Notes for Series 2101 User’s.
The above configurations are applicable to connecting Desktop Directors to the 2101 Studio Interface.
The Series 2101 Studio Interface is supplied with two Desktop Director ports. Just as with the Telos TWOx12 it can therefore support up to 4 Desktop Directors as shown above. Note however that the 2101 Studio Interface can optionally support 8 Desktop Directors by adding the optional Dual Desktop Director Interface Card (Telos part # 0212-1200). Note that power must be provided for these additional Desktop Directors using the external power arrangements show above. The 2101 Studio Interface is limited to powering two Desktop Directors.
The Series 2101 Studio Interface may be optionally attached to a Telos TWO dual hybrid to create a four hybrid studio Configuration. Note that the TWO must be the only connected to a given Desktop Director™ port. Therefore the maximum number of Desktop Directors a Studio with an attached Telos TWO can support must be reduced by two. See the following table:
NUMBER OF DESKTOP DIRECTORS | NUMBER OF DESKTOP PORTS 4 (with 0212-1200 installed)
1-2 | No power supply needed unless Desktop Directors are located more than 250 feet from Studio Interface. | No power supply needed unless Desktop Directors are located more than 250 feet from Studio Interface.
1 + Telos TWO | No power supply needed unless Desktop Director is located more than 250 feet from Studio Interface. | No power supply needed unless Desktop Director is located more than 250 feet from Studio Interface.
3-4 | Power must be provided for 3rd & 4th Desktop Directors. | Power must be provided for 3rd & 4th Desktop Directors.
3-6 + Telos TWO | Must add part # 0212-1200 Desktop Director Interface. | Power must be provided for 3rd, 4th , 5th, & 6th Desktop Directors.
8 | Must add part # 0212-1200 Desktop Director Interface. | Power must be provided for 3rd, 4th , 5th,6th, 7th & 8th Desktop Directors. |
