Scope
This document covers the steps to interface fixed lines from a Telos broadcast Phone System, such as a VX Enterprise, with a Quasar console.
This article will not cover the actual phone system setup.
Description
Telos Broadcast Phone Sytems have long had two kinds of Hybrids. In today’s VX products, we call these Faders, as phone calls typically land on the fader of a console. The terms Faders, Hybrids, and Channels (Vx) are interchangeable for this discussion.
VX (and many products before it) has always had two modes. Fixed and Selectable faders.
Selectable faders are traditionally used in the US. For example, you might have two phone faders on your console, and you would “select” which phone line goes to each fader.
Fixed faders (also called EU or Euro mode) are fixed. Each phone number is fixed to a fader. You’ll have four faders on your console if you have four phone numbers.
When using fixed faders on Quasar, the CALL CONTROL tab on the Quasar MTS module is only used for dialing and enabling/disabling the Block All function.
Setup
Quasar Show Profile
Even though the line control in the MTS CALL CONTROL tab is not used, the call control still needs to be connected to the console so the dial pad can be used.
In the show profile setup of the Quasar Web UI, select your show profile and select Phone Control
In Phone Control settings, select the proper protocol (VX or AP). Enter;
Phone Server IP
Studio Name
(Show Name (optional)
Click Save Show
You must reload the Show Profile for changes to take effect.
Verify your connection
Once connected, INFORMATION on the CALL CONTROL tab will show the Studio and Show name.
Quasar Source Profile(s)
In Fixed fader operation, each Fader (Hybrid) requires it’s own Phone Source profile In Quasar.
In the source profiles setup page of the Quasar Web UI, create a new Source profile by clicking the Create new source profile button.
In the Source Settings section,
Enter a meaningful source name (this is shown on the channel strip display)
Select Phone for Source Type (other source types do not have any phone control or back feeds)
In the Stream I/O Settings section,
Select the stream type and stream information (in our example, Livewire, and channel 20021)
In the Phone Control section,
Enter the Server IP (the same one used earlier in the Show Profile setup)
Select the phone system used (in our example, Vx)
Enter the Studio Name (must match the name in Vx EXACTLY)
Enter the Fixed Hybrid number (obtained from Vx)
Make any other changes to the show profile (Backfeed, availablity options, Auto Mix, etc) then scroll to the bottom of the page and click OK to save the Profile.
Quasar Module configuration
A SET and HOLD button is required on each Fader that will host a fixed line.
XR-4FAD Module configuration
Navigate to the Web UI of your XR-4FAD module and Select Hardware Key Map
Set the Hardware Key Map as shown here.
Repeat the steps for any fader modules that will host Fixed faders.
Note that on XR-4FAD modules, User keys 3 and 4 already have the labels SET and HOLD.
SR Module Configuration
Quasar SR only has a single button on each fader for user-defined purposes. For this configuration, we will use the AUTO PHONE selection. AUTO PHONE has special functions in that the button becomes SET and HOLD (single button) when the type source type is PHONE, but acts like a normal USER button if it’s a different source type.
The behavior of AUTO PHONE is;
The Button lamp will flash when ringing.
Short press Answers the call (button lamp is solid when answered)
Short press again drops the call.
A long press (more than 2 secons then relase) puts the call on hold.
Short press again to pick up a held call.
From the MTS Web UI, select SR Modules under the Configuration heading.
Set Key USER 1 to AUTO PHONE, as shown below.
Click Apply.
Note that all SR modules are set simustaneously and do not have sparate settings like XR modules. The USER button on the faders says USER .
