What computer network adapters can I use with Livewire?

Scope

This document describes network card selection criteria for a Windows PC when used on a Livewire network.

Description

Physical network ports on computers are mostly ubiquitous now.  And the built-in network cards are almost always the best choice.  But here are some things to consider when selecting or using a network card.

Telos does not test network adapters.

Selection process

The key to having a successfully working network adapter is to ensure that the network card you are using is supported by the hardware and operating system you are running.

For example;

  • Customers will purchase mid-range servers and then, for cost reasons, install a Desktop Operating system.  If the Manufacturer does not list that desktop OS as qualified for your hardware, skip it.

  • Buy server adapters for server hardware.

  • Buy Desktop adapters for Desktop computers.

  • Don’t try to use Desktop adapters on servers or Server adapters on Desktop computers.

  • Make sure the adapter you have lists the Operating system as being supported.

    • For example, you have an existing Realtek adapter, and you want to use it on Windows 11.  If Realtek does not list Windows 11, find a different network card, or don’t run Windows 11.

To summarize, the network adapter should be qualified for the hardware platform (Desktop or Server) AND your Operating system.

What about USB adapters?

We have a document covering this, and they generally work well. But keep in mind that a USB can come unplugged, whereas a wired adapter will not.  Using USB network adapters for Livewire

Support notes

If you have problems with a computer running the Axia Driver for Windows, the first thing to check is the network card driver's compatibility with your platform.  If those adapters are not listed as supported, Telos  cannot assist you. Please ensure your network card driver is correct and current before contacting support.
