Linear Acoustic LA-5300 Frequently Asked Questions

This article provides answers to frequently asked questions about the Linear Acoustic LA-5300, including audio processing, Dolby encoding, audio I/O, networking, clocking, software updates, and troubleshooting.

1. What should I do if I hear pops or clicks in the audio?

If you hear pops, clicks, or other intermittent audio artifacts, one of the first things to check is the clock reference on the LA-5300.

Verify that the unit is configured to use the correct clock/reference source for your installation and that the selected reference is present and stable.

An incorrect, missing, or unstable clock reference can cause synchronization problems that may be heard as pops or clicks in the audio.

Also verify that other equipment in the signal chain is properly synchronized to the facility timing/reference system.

Tip: If pops and clicks begin after making changes to the signal path, verify the LA-5300 clock and reference configuration before making changes to the audio processing settings.

2. What audio processing features are available on the LA-5300?

Depending on the installed configuration and licenses, the LA-5300 can provide several audio processing functions, including:

  • APTO loudness processing

  • UPMAX ISC upmixing

  • Dolby encoding and decoding

  • Dolby transcoding

  • Loudness management

  • Audio routing

  • AES67 audio transport

  • SDI and AES3 audio handling

Available features depend on the hardware configuration, software version, and feature licenses installed on the unit.

3. What Dolby formats does the LA-5300 support?

Depending on the installed licenses and configuration, the LA-5300 can support Dolby technologies used in both traditional and next-generation broadcast workflows.

These can include:

  • Dolby Digital (AC-3)

  • Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3)

  • Dolby AC-4

  • Dolby Atmos-related workflows where supported

  • Dolby decoding and transcoding

If a Dolby feature or processing option does not appear in the user interface, verify that the appropriate license is installed and active.

4. What audio input and output formats does the LA-5300 support?

The LA-5300 supports multiple professional broadcast audio interfaces. Depending on the hardware configuration, these can include:

  • SDI embedded audio

  • AES3 digital audio

  • AES67 Audio over IP

  • Additional supported I/O options based on the installed hardware

Audio can be routed and processed within the LA-5300 before being sent to the required output.

Always verify the physical I/O configuration of the specific LA-5300 when planning a signal path.

5. Can the LA-5300 process more than one audio program at the same time?

Yes. The LA-5300 can be configured to process multiple audio programs, depending on the installed processing configuration and licenses.

Each program can have its own routing and processing requirements.

The number of programs and the processing available to each program depend on the configuration of the system.

6. Can I route audio from one input type to a different output type?

Yes. The LA-5300 provides flexible audio routing that allows audio entering through one supported interface to be routed to another supported output.

For example, a system may use:

  • SDI input with AES3 output

  • SDI input with AES67 output

  • AES67 input with SDI output

  • AES3 input with SDI output

When configuring cross-format routing, carefully verify the channel assignments and channel mapping.

Incorrect channel mapping can result in missing audio, incorrect channel placement, or audio appearing on an unexpected output.

7. What is UPMAX ISC, and when should I use it?

UPMAX ISC is Linear Acoustic's upmixing technology.

It can be used when stereo content needs to be presented within a multichannel audio environment. UPMAX creates an appropriate multichannel presentation while maintaining compatibility with the original stereo program.

This is particularly useful in broadcast environments where the source material may regularly change between stereo and multichannel programming.

UPMAX helps provide a more consistent listening experience as the source format changes.

8. What is APTO, and how does it control loudness?

APTO is Linear Acoustic's television audio processing technology designed to help broadcasters maintain consistent loudness and audio quality.

APTO processing can be used to manage:

  • Program loudness

  • Dynamic range

  • Loudness consistency

  • Peak levels

  • Differences between program sources

The processing can be configured according to the requirements of the broadcast facility and applicable loudness standards.

When adjusting APTO settings, monitor the resulting audio and loudness measurements to ensure the desired result is being achieved.

9. How do I configure and monitor the LA-5300 remotely?

The LA-5300 provides network-based configuration and monitoring capabilities.

Connect the Control network interface to the appropriate management network and configure the required IP settings.

Depending on the software and configuration being used, the LA-5300 can then be accessed using the supported Linear Acoustic/Telos Alliance remote-control interface.

Remote access allows operators and engineers to monitor and configure functions such as:

  • Audio routing

  • Processing

  • Input and output configuration

  • Dolby settings

  • System status

  • Licensing

  • Network configuration

For security, the Control interface should be connected only to an appropriate trusted management network.

10. What is the difference between the Control and AES67 network connections?

The Control network connection is primarily used for management, configuration, and remote access to the LA-5300.

The AES67 network connection is used for Audio over IP traffic.

When both interfaces are used, they should be configured according to the network requirements described in the LA-5300 documentation. In particular, the Control and AES67 interfaces should be placed on separate subnets.

AES67 operation may also depend on proper:

  • PTP configuration

  • Network clocking

  • Multicast configuration

  • Switch configuration

  • QoS configuration

If AES67 audio is missing or unstable, verify both the LA-5300 configuration and the configuration of the network infrastructure.

11. How do I back up, update, or restore an LA-5300?

Before performing a software update or making significant configuration changes, it is recommended to save or document the existing configuration.

Before updating:

  1. Verify the current software version.

  2. Back up or document the existing configuration.

  3. Document important audio routing and processing settings.

  4. Verify installed feature licenses.

  5. Obtain the appropriate software version for the LA-5300.

  6. Schedule the update during an appropriate maintenance window.

Some update, licensing, or maintenance operations can interrupt audio processing.

Important: Do not perform software updates on an on-air system without first planning for the potential interruption of audio.

12. What should I check if the LA-5300 has no audio or the output is incorrect?

If the LA-5300 has no audio, missing channels, or incorrect output audio, work through the signal path from input to output.

Check the following:

  • Verify that audio is present at the physical input.

  • Verify the selected input source.

  • Check audio routing and channel assignments.

  • Verify that the required processing engine is enabled.

  • Check the output routing and output configuration.

  • Verify the clock/reference source.

  • Confirm that required feature licenses are installed.

  • For AES67, verify PTP synchronization and network configuration.

  • For SDI, verify the correct embedded audio groups and channels.

  • Check whether bypass or passthrough modes are enabled.

If the problem began after a configuration change, review the most recently changed routing, clocking, or processing settings first.

When troubleshooting, it is often helpful to simplify the signal path temporarily. Confirm that audio can pass through the LA-5300 using the simplest possible configuration, and then re-enable processing and routing functions one at a time.
