Scope
This document applies to the use of a USB WiFi dongle with your Telos Z/IP ONE. This USB network adapter is no longer available for purchase from Telos.
Description
Customers will often ask if a Telos Z/IP ONE can be used with WiFi. The answer is yes. In fact, the Z/IP ONE used to ship with a WiFi dongle, however, most people never used them and they ended up getting lost or discarded.
Early units were an IOGear GWU523 which has since been discontinued and was replaced by the IOGear GWU625
If you can't find one, there are other ways to connect your Z/IP ONE and Legacy Zephyr IP to WiFi, such as interface bridging with a computer. You'll find out how to do that with a Windows PC here.
Supported Version
All versions of the Z/IP, including the "classic" ZephyrIP support the original IOGear GWU523.
Version 1.6 or higher of the Z/IP ONE is required for support of the IOGear GWU625. The GWU625 is not supported on the classic-style ZephyrIP units.
GWU523 is shown here
Newer, GWU625 is shown here
Installation
The installation is very simple. There are no drivers to install as support is already included assuming you're running the correct version of software.
You may receive an error message during the install that it can not be installed. This message will be displayed if your unit does not have an adequate connection to the WiFi network. Although it might appear as though something has gone wrong with the installation, you do not have adequate signal strength.
Often the Z/IP ONE is installed in a rack with other equipment. This other equipment and surrounding metal cases can cause interference. Using a short USB extension cable and locating the USB network adapter in a more open space will improve this condition.
Finally
Although it is untested, any USB WiFi network adapter which uses the same chipset as this IOGear unit should work fine. However, remember that there are other ways to connect your Z/IP to WiFi, such as interface bridging with a computer. You'll find out how to do that with a Windows PC here.
