My iPort says my Leap seconds file is expired

Scope

This document applies to the iPort High Density specifically related to NTP time synchronization.

Description

Although no timed functions can be created directly on any iPort (old or new), accurate NTP time synchronization may be desirable for logging purposes. The leap second file needs to be updated periodically. The expiration date of the active leap second file is shown on the iPort

This may be more important if your unit has the Content Delay feature.  Otherwise, all you are doing is adjusting log time by ± 1 second every few years

Leap Seconds File (more information than you may want to know)

A leap-seconds file is a record used in computer systems to track adjustments made to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) due to the Earth's irregular rotation. Leap seconds are added or subtracted periodically to keep UTC in sync with the Earth's rotation, which can vary slightly over time.

Here's what a leap seconds file typically includes:

  • Date and Time of Leap Seconds: It lists specific dates and times when leap seconds have been added or subtracted from UTC.

  • Adjustment Type: Indicates whether a leap second was added (+1) or subtracted (-1) from the UTC time to account for the Earth's rotational variations.

  • Reason for Adjustment: Sometimes includes notes or reasons for the adjustment, often related to maintaining the accuracy of UTC in relation to astronomical time.

This information is crucial for systems that need to accurately calculate time over long periods, such as those used in telecommunications, satellite navigation, and scientific research.  The Telos iPort is none of these, but I digress—back to configuration.

Updating the leap-seconds file on your iPort

  1. Right-click this link and choose Save Link As. This will download a file called leap-seconds.list

  2. Save it to your computer

  3. On the Webpage of your iPortm, under the Configuration heading, click on AoIP and Options

  4. In the NTP Configuration section, locate the Upload Leapfile options

  5. Click Choose File

  6. Locate and select the leap-seconds file from step 1.

  7. Click Upload

NTP configuration settings with options to upload leap seconds and time zone adjustments.

You should receive the message

Click the back button, then refresh your browser.  Your Active Leapfile expiration date should be updated.
