No DVI Graphics on i5 Engine

Scope

A BIOS reflash procedure for the fanless i5 Engines only. This does not apply to the Core2Duo fanless or older fanned versions of the Mix Engine platform. Verify your hardware first by navigating to the Sytem page under the Mix Engine heading.  Check to see that your Hardware is I5-2515E, as shown here.

Description

After upgrading an Element console to a Fusion or installing the Element ETH4CAN interface upgrade, you might notice that the fanless i5 Mix Engine's DVI port puts the monitor to sleep instead of displaying console graphics as it should. This could be due to an incorrect BIOS setting that sends video to the wrong location. The instructions below will guide you through the process of re-flashing the BIOS.

This procedure involves 3rd party software. Even though the software we mention is free and available, Telos Alliance can neither take responsibility for nor provide support for it in any way.

Materials

  • PC running Windows

  • USB Flash disk

  • USB keyboard

  • DVI monitor

  • BIOS Update Archive file: i5_BIOS_FLASH.zip - CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD

  1. Download and unzip the contents of i5_BIOS_FLASH.zip to a location on the PC — For example, on the Desktop.

The "Read_Me.txt" file goes over these same instructions just in case.

  1. Insert the USB Flash disk into the PC

  2. Run Rufus-3-13.exe

Rufus is used to create a bootable DOS partition on the USB flash disk. This will completely erase the data currently on the disk. If you have any questions about how to use Rufus, please refer to their support documentation.

  • Set DEVICE to the USB flash disk

  • Set BOOT SELECTION to FreeDOS

  • Set FILE SYSTEM to FAT32

  • Click START and wait for the drive to format.

  • When formatting is finished (progress bar under Status turns green, and says READY), close Rufus by clicking CLOSE

  1. Once the USB flash disk has been formatted, copy the ADV9_f folder to the root directory of the USB flash disk.

  2. Eject the USB flash disk from the PC.

  3. Plug the USB flash disk, keyboard, and DVI monitor into the engine and power the engine up.

Notice: Steps 7 and 8 involve interaction with a DOS prompt. The command set is not case sensitive but please be careful to enter the commands exactly as shown below. Also pay attention to the orientation of the slashes (' \ ' versus ' / ').

  4. When you receive C:\>a prompt, you will need to go to the directory that contains the first reflash step. To do this, type the following command and press ENTER:

cd ADV9_f\5790a104

The prompt should change toC:\ADV9_f\5790a104>with no errors.

At this point, run the first reflash step by typing the following command and pressing ENTER:

adtec 5790a104.bin

After issuing this command, a BIOS reflash preparation process will begin. When it is complete, the engine will reboot.

  1. Once the engine reboots and you receive anotherC:\>prompt, go to the directory that contains the second reflash step. To do this type the following command and press ENTER:

cd ADV9_f\ADVSPI

The prompt should change toC:\ADV9_f\ADVSPI>with no errors.

Now, run the second reflash step by typing the following command and pressing ENTER:

ADVSPI 5790b110.bin

The terminal will ask you if you are sure. Type 'y' to continue, and the BIOS reflash will begin. This one will take a little bit longer, so do not disturb it.

When finished, it will return you to aC:\>prompt.

  1. Power the engine down, remove the USB flash disk, and power the engine back on.

The reflash is complete.
